The Adaptable Millennial Worker project

a parent journey

What is it?

The Adaptable Millennial Worker is an innovative project I started.

The aim of the project is to develop a strategy that can respond to and bring together three key elements:

- the need of an ever-changing job market to have employees who are able to adapt to new and coming roles;

- the request from millennials and younger generations for flexible, varied jobs with purpose;

- the need of individuals to have a certain level of job stability at some point in their lives to be able to fulfil other not-working related roles (e.g. being a parent, a carer, etc).

If you would like to know more about how the project is progressing, please look at my Blog and follow my social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram).

Let's talk
When?

The project kicked off in May 2019 with an initial plan to run it for 12 months.

I will review in May 2020 and decide on further developments, depending on the outcomes.

If you would like to talk about the project or be involved, please get in touch and I will be more than welcome to discuss a collaboration.

How?

The project revolves around 6 main pillars:

Pillar 1- Connect - Actively seek networking opportunities using a combination of networking events, conferences, one to one chats and online networking.

Pillar 2- Shadowing - Actively seek shadowing opportunities through the above-mentioned networking to gain first-hand insights of different approaches and cultures.

Pillar 3- Charity - Work on missions I strongly support. This includes existing volunteering roles and new ones to be explored.

Pillar 4- Personal and Professional Development - Work on my own personal and professional development through self-coaching and building opportunities to contribute to other people's development (presentations, sessions facilitation, peer support groups creation etc).

Pillar 5- Self-training - Identify key areas (up to 4) where I can expand my knowledge through a combination of self-learning techniques including but not limited to lectures, seminars, online training and reading.

Pillar 6- Random acts of curiosity - Build space to explore less conventional areas. This includes attending events, reading, listening to podcasts and have meaningful conversations with people in my personal network.

Where?
Who?

This project is fully integrated into my day-to-day life.  Therefore it includes experiences from the people I meet through my

- job;

- professional networks;

- charity network;

- personal network;

- social media channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter).

I want to gather first-hand experience of the challenges of carrying out a less conventional type of continuous personal and professional development while maintaining a full-time job and supporting a family.

Why?

So why am I doing this project?

  1. Because I strongly value making a difference in people's life.

  2. Because I want to practice what I preach and be a role model.

  3. Because I am a strong advocate of taking ownership of your own personal and professional development.

  4. Because I want to learn and help others to learn.

  5. Because I strongly believe that the eagerness to learn and experiment of the younger workers holds an invaluable underutilised potential and it is our responsibility to satisfy and make the most out of it.
